INTRODUCTION
This edition of The Evangelical Lutheran Prayer Book builds upon
the foundation laid in the original 2022 volume, refined through ongoing
daily use, prayer, and reflection. The first edition served as a
practical tool for the laity to enter into the daily rhythm of liturgical
prayer, rooted in Scripture, the historic Daily Office, and the
confessional Lutheran tradition. Its purpose remains unchanged: to
provide Christians with a devotional life shaped not by personal whim or
cultural trends, but by the worship patterns of the Church throughout the
ages. In this updated edition, the core structure and theological
commitments remain intact, while thoughtful revisions have been made to
improve clarity, accessibility, and devotional richness.
The most substantial improvement is the expanded collection of Hymns,
Sequences, and Other Chants, which has been significantly broadened to
accompany the liturgical year more fully and to support those wishing to
incorporate sacred song into their daily prayer. Other enhancements
include refinements to the lectionary references, improvements to layout
for easier use, and additional seasonal prayers and readings to support
the Church's calendar. My aim has not been to create something new, but
to serve the Church with a resource that fosters heavenly-minded prayer
in an earthly pilgrimage. As before, this book is not a replacement for
the Divine Service, but a companion to it; a tool to strengthen private
devotion, family worship, and the cultivation of a life steeped in the
Word of God. May it continue to serve as a small foretaste of the eternal
praise to come.
Soli Deo Gloria!
